The Basics
So, who came up with the idea of acids and bases?
What are acids and bases?
Acids and bases are common liquids that exist everywhere. Almost every liquid that we encounter in our daily lives consists of acidic and basic properties.
What is a base?The Brøwnsted-Lowry definition is...
1. An H+ (proton) acceptor 2. An electron pair donor 3. Produces OH- ions when dissolved in water |
During the late 1800s, a Swedish chemist named Svantte Arrhenius proposed that every compound can either be defined as an acid or as a base. He then wrote a list of properties of each type of substance. In 1923, two scientists named Johannes Nicolas Brønsted and Thomas Martin Lowry simultaneously defined acids and bases in the exact same way!
